Ladies Golden Again. Gents Great Effort.
After suffering some close losses in the OUA Sessionals and Crossover play, the gents was able to sneak into the OUA Playoffs with a 2-4 record. In the OUA semi-final, top-ranked and eventual OUA champions York Lions defeated Toronto 6-1. The lone win came from rookie Stan Szczepanski at the number two spot.
The following day in the bronze medal fixture against the Waterloo Warriors, Torontos doubles teams led the way with the early point win acquired by the number one (Stan Szczepanski and Rowan Thompson) and number three teams (Bobby Gheorghiu and Jeff Dawson). Veteran Rowan Thompson and rookie Andrew Gilmour provided Toronto with their 2 singles wins in straight sets. Mark Rennesson, Stan Szczepanski, Jeff Dawson and Bobby Gheorghiu lost their singles matches, which gave Waterloo the close 4-3 win over U of T.
Led by third-year all-star Isabel Jaorsz, the Varsity Blues Women’s tennis team was dominant throughout the season. Going into the playoffs with a record of without dropping a single fixture, the ladies feel good about their chances of repeating as OUA Champions
In the OUA semi-final, the ladies defeated the York Lions 6-1. The doubles point was captured by our number one (Isabel Jarosz and Tina Petkova 8-0 ) and number three teams (Qiuyan Tian and Teresa Schirripa 8-5). In singles play, the ladies took five of six points. Co-captain Jarosz defeated Joelle Fisher 6-2, 6-1. Ekaterina Alchits defeatedYork’s Avesha Maharaj 6-1, 6-2. Petkova defeated Adalia Quek 6-1, 6-1. Anatassia Tikhomirova defeated Elizabeth Smart 6-1, 6-4. Tian defeated Katarzyna Jerzak 6-4, 6-2. Veteran Schirripa lost a tough match to Kiran Rooprai 6-7 (5). 4-6. Christina Dykun defeated her opponent 8-7 (2) in an exhibition pro-set.
The next day in the championship game on Saturday, the ladies successfully defended the OUA title by defeating McGill Martlets 5-2 in the finals. This is the second year in a row that the ladies have won the gold. Jarosz who plays number one position in singles and in doubles (with rookie Petkova) led the way with the early doubles win over McGill’s Ceren Bayson and Elizabeth Paden. Combined with her win in singles, Jarosz finished off the season with an undefeated record. She was also undefeated on last year’s championship team.
Veterans Tian and Schirripa came back in the doubles from being down at match point in the tiebreaker to win 9-7 and gave us the early one point lead going into the singles. Jarosz once again led the way with the early singles 6-2, 6-3 win against Ceren Bayson that put us up with a 2-0 lead. Graduating players Schirripa and Tian followed up with singles wins over Arielle Datie (6-2, 6-1) and Sarah Kawaguchi (6-0, 6-4) respectively, which clinched the OUA championship and gave us the 4-0 lead. Third year veteran Alchits and the two rookies Petkova and Tikhomirova were still on the courts. Petkova gave the team their 5-0 lead with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Alison Weinberg. Cheering on the sidelines were singles and doubles alternates Co-captain Masha Sidorova, rookies Dykun, Beckie Lovisek, Sindy Sabourin, Doreya Karim. Astrid Mannheim and Maria Lazar were unable to make the trip. Our team captains Jarosz and Sidorova accepted the banner and trophy.
