U of T dominate Sydney Hermant Interuniversity Tournament.
Over the weekend, the U of T Varsity Blues Tennis team sent four mixed doubles teams to participate in the annual
Sydney Hermant Interuniversity Tournament at the Queen's Club in Toronto.
The tournament featured two teams Toronto battled with during the season in the OUA, the York Lions and the McMaster Marauders,
as well as, out-of-province University of Montreal Carabins.
U of T 3 (Ekaterina Alchits and Yaroslav Riabinin) and U of T 4 (Christina Dykun and Andrew Anderson) suffered first round
losses in the single-elimination tournament. U of T 2 (Tina Petkova and Rowan Thompson) defeated York 3, Montreal 3 and Montreal 2
en route to the final. U of T 1 (Team Captains Isabel Jarosz and Mark Renneson) proved too strong in matches against
Montreal 4, York 2 and Montreal 1. These results set up an all Toronto final.
In the final, Petkova and Thompson started slow and dropped the first set 2-6. In the second, things were much closer.
Neither team went easy on their teammates with Thompson and Renneson blasting balls at Jarosz and Petkova repeatedly. However
the ladies were up to the challenge with strong service returns and some great net play. In the end, U of T 1 proved a little
too strong for U of T 2 and won the tiebreak and the match.
Jarosz and Renneson accepted the Sydney M. Hermant Memorial Trophy and thanked the Queen's Club for hosting yet another
wonderful tournament on behalf of the entire University of Toronto Varsity Blues Tennis Team.
